Tom Cowley joins the LCA faculty this year to teach math and science in the Grammar and Middle Schools. A Louisville native with a business degree from the University of Kentucky in 1974, Tom has worked in accounting and in real estate renovation with a focus on historic properties, but he also found time to teach math to grades 5 - 8 at St, Francis of Goshen School in the early 1980's.
In 2006, Tom made a full commitment to teaching with enrollment in the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Bellarmine University. His master's degree, just completed in May of 2009, focused on Math and Science at the Middle School level, an extension of his lifelong interest in gardening, building solar ovens, weather stations, wood working and electric motors. (What's next? Bee keeping.)
Tom’s philosophy of teaching can be stated simply. He believes children learn best when they are routinely challenged with engaging and relevant activities. As a parent at St. Francis of Goshen, he supported its program learning with a pivotal role in the creation of the 'Children's Garden'. He also served on its Board of Directors and assisted as a substitute teacher, always ready to lend his wealth of life experience to enrich the classroom environment.
Tom has been married for over twenty years to Dr. Marianne Cowley, a local ophthalmologist. They have four children – daughters Anna, 15, and Tevy, 11, who were adopted in Cambodia, and sons Ben, 18, and Sam, 14. Tom has made their rearing his primary pursuit, a family decision that led to his extraordinary involvement in their educations. Home is a forty-six acre farm in L’Esprit, just outside of Lagrange, where they have raised a variety of animals from chickens to donkeys. At the moment, most of their free time on the farm is devoted to riding three Icelandic Horses.
