John Striggles                                              MS, Biochemistry           University of Missouri-Columbia

John Striggles is a native Louisvillian, whose life has been driven by his curiosity in areas such as education, history, and science.   After graduating from Bellarmine in 1973 with a BA in Political Science, Mr. Striggles worked for many years in the Newburg community where he spearheaded the creation of a preschool, after-school programs, and Saturday schools.  Many graduates of his programs went on to graduate from some of the finer institutions of the South, including Clark, Fisk, and Morehouse.

Mr. Striggles left Louisville in 1983 in pursuit of drier climates in Colorado and Arizona for health reasons.   In Phoenix, he served as a Juvenile Probation Officer where he received many commendations from Maricopa County Juvenile Court, the Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, and the National Society of Black Engineers for his creation of motivational, tutorial, and diversion programs for adolescents.

In Phoenix, Mr. Striggles also continued his formal education by completing the undergraduate requirements for a degree in Chemistry at Arizona  State University.   As a Teaching Assistant at Arizona State, he taught Chemistry courses and labs.  In 2001, Mr. Striggles began his graduate studies in Biochemistry at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he also served as a Research Assistant.  His research in nucleic acids led to a 2006 article published in the periodical RNA, entitled Frequency of RNA-RNA interaction in a model of the RNA World

Since returning to Louisville in 2004, Mr. Striggles has lectured and taught labs in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, General Biology, and Molecular Biology at Indiana University Southeast, Jefferson Community and Technical College, and Spalding University.  He has also served as a Preferred Substitute Teacher at Shawnee High.    For John Striggles, the classroom is a magical place where learning takes place for both the teacher and student.
