Cindy Buckland                                                BS, Elementary Education         Concord College

Ms. Buckland's degree in Elementary Education included a specialization in mathematics, and she continued her education at the University of Southern Illinois to meet state requirements to teach high school mathematics.   Ms. Buckland taught in Illinois public schools before moving to Kentucky, where she has taught at United Christian Academy, Highlands Latin School, and Christian Academy of Louisville.  Her teaching experience ranges from 7th grade math to calculus and includes some computer classes.  At the Academy, she teaches pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, and pre-Calculus.

While Ms. Buckland admires the Saxon math curriculum for its rigor and ease of use in the multi-age classroom, she has become intrigued with Asian math instructional strategies as a result of her family having hosted students from China in recent years whose math abilities are exceptional in comparison with their American peers.  She recognizes many such strategies in the Academy's Singapore Math curriculum, which she uses with Saxon according to the needs of individual students.  As her former students (including Academy teacher Virginia Smith) will attest, Ms. Buckland's serenity and patience help eliminate anxiety from learning mathematics.

Ms. Buckland is also valued by her Academy colleagues as a model for life-long learning.  In her spare time, she has undertaken self-directed study for exams to become an actuary - which she passed during the 2008 - 2009 year.  Congratulations, Mrs. Buckland!    She has also worked in the Monday-Friday program, where students could access math help from LCA's most advanced math teacher.
